5 Signs Your Pool Pump Needs Repair — Perth Homeowner's Guide
Share
Your pool pump works hard through Perth's long, hot summers. But like any mechanical device, it wears down over time. Recognising the early warning signs can save you hundreds of dollars in emergency repairs and keep your pool crystal clear all season.
Here are five signs that your pool pump may need professional attention, and what you can do about each one.
The Warning Signs
Loud Grinding or Squealing Noises
If your pump suddenly sounds like it is grinding metal, the bearings are likely worn. Pool pump bearings degrade naturally over time, especially in Perth's dry climate where dust and heat accelerate wear. Left unchecked, failed bearings can burn out the motor entirely. A bearing and seal replacement is one of the most common repairs we perform and typically costs far less than a full motor swap.
Water Leaking from the Pump Body
Puddles around your pump housing usually point to a failed mechanical seal. The seal sits between the motor shaft and the wet end of the pump, preventing water from reaching the electrical components. In Perth's climate, seals can dry out and crack during winter when the pump runs less often. Catching a leak early prevents water damage to the motor windings, which is a much more expensive fix.
Pump Hums but Will Not Start
A humming sound without the impeller spinning is the classic symptom of a failed capacitor. The capacitor provides the initial surge of power to get the motor spinning. They are inexpensive to replace, but running a pump with a failing capacitor can overheat the motor. If your pump trips the circuit breaker or RCD switch repeatedly, turn it off and call a technician before attempting to restart it.
Reduced Water Flow or Suction
If your pool is not circulating properly despite the pump running, the impeller may be clogged or damaged. Leaves, debris, and even small stones can enter the pump basket and jam the impeller. In older pumps, the impeller vanes wear thin and lose efficiency. A blocked or worn impeller means your pool filter cannot do its job, leading to cloudy water and algae growth, particularly common during Perth summers.
Visible Cracks or Corrosion on the Pump
Perth's sun and pool chemicals take a toll on pump housings over the years. UV damage causes plastic to become brittle, and salt from chlorinated water corrodes metal components. If you notice cracks in the pump lid, housing, or unions, it is time for a replacement before a catastrophic failure floods your pump pad and potentially damages other pool equipment.
What to Do When You Spot These Signs
Do Not Ignore the Problem
A small repair today is almost always cheaper than a major repair tomorrow. Most pool pump issues are progressive. A worn bearing becomes a seized motor. A small leak becomes water damage to the windings. Early intervention is the best way to extend the life of your pump and protect your investment.
If you notice any of these symptoms, the best course of action is to have a qualified technician diagnose the problem. At Perth Pool Pump Rescue, we offer a collect-and-return service that makes the whole process painless. We pick up your pump from your property, diagnose and repair it at our fully equipped workshop using OEM-grade parts, then return it run-tested and ready to reinstall.
Our standard repair service is $280 and includes collection, diagnosis, repair, and return delivery. If you just need a diagnosis, that starts at $66. We also provide free loan pumps so your pool stays healthy while we work on yours.
Keeping Your Pump Healthy Between Services
Regular Basket Cleaning
Check and empty your pump basket every week during summer, and at least fortnightly during winter. A clogged basket makes the pump work harder, increasing strain on bearings and seals. It takes thirty seconds and can add years to your pump's life.
Keep the Area Around Your Pump Clear
Ensure adequate airflow around the motor. Remove any garden debris, leaves, or cobwebs that build up around the pump housing. Good ventilation helps the motor run cooler, especially during the hottest months here in Perth.
Run Your Pump at the Right Times
During summer, run your pump for 8 to 10 hours per day, ideally during off-peak electricity hours. In winter, 4 to 6 hours is usually sufficient. Running the pump for too short a period allows algae to take hold, while running it too long wastes energy and puts unnecessary wear on mechanical components.
Schedule an Annual Service
Like your car, your pool pump benefits from regular professional servicing. An annual check can catch seal wear, bearing roughness, and electrical issues before they cause a breakdown. We recommend booking a service at the start of each pool season, typically around September or October in Perth.
